2025, Bronze Medalist
Steven M. Archer, MD
Steven M. Archer, MD is the Ida Lucy lacobucci Collegiate Professor in the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan where, with his long-time associate, Dr. Monte Del Monte, he has trained over 80 pediatric ophthalmology fellows. A postdoctoral fellowship in developmental neurobiology during which he studied visual system development utilizing tetrodotoxin—before it was cool—preceded his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Chicago and a Pediatric Ophthalmology fellowship at Indiana University. Dr. Archer received the AAO Senior Achievement Award and the AAPOS Lifetime Achievement Award and has presented the Scobee and Costenbader lectures. Academic interests include improved surgical techniques such as partial tendon recession and augmented transpositions, and debunking dogma such as the primacy of the dose-response curve and medial vs. lateral rectus muscle surgery for near vs. distance alignment.
