Each year, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) hosts an annual symposium where leading experts and researchers in the field share information about cutting-edge technology and the latest innovations in care. Colleagues from around the world convene to learn from one another and build relationships that further advance pediatric ophthalmology.

In 2012, Marilyn Miller, MD gave a generous gift to underwrite the costs of pediatric ophthalmologists outside of North America who were unable to cover the fees associated with attending the meeting. This gift began an important Foundation program, now named Global Education and Training.

International ophthalmologists benefit from a vastly expanded collegial network and develop skills they bring back to their respective countries, where they are encouraged to share what they have learned in their localities and beyond.

"The AAOS 2018 meeting was rewarding in more ways than one. But meeting colleagues and other attendees and discussing preferred practice patterns with them was for me the most rewarding part of the meeting. This gave me ideas for incorporating new management techniques in my practice.

Attending AAPOS 2018 was like a shot in the arm. I was much inspired by the lectures/presentations/discussions. Some of the changes which stemmed from the above: 1) initiated the use of atropine 0.01% for control of childhood myopia progression, 2) incorporated new surgical techniques in my practice, and 3) organized the first eye genetics course in Oman."
