Dr. Tina Rutar has been in private practice as a pediatric ophthalmologist and strabismus specialist in Southern Oregon since 2013.  She is a partner at Cataract and Laser Institute of Southern Oregon, P.C. in Medford, Oregon.  Previously, Dr. Rutar was an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco, where she was Director of the Visual Center for the Child.  She also consulted for the Smith Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco under the mentorship of Dr. Art Jampolsky.

Active in the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus since her residency training, Dr. Rutar has served on the AAPOS Program Committee, the Costenbader Lecture Committee and the Professional Education Committee (chair, 2020-2021).  She was awarded the AAPOS Honor Award in 2018.  Other awards include the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2019), the Deborah Hoyt and Creig S. Hoyt Chair in Pediatric Ophthalmology (2012), the Jules Stein Eye Institute Clinical Fellow Research Award (2008), and the Heed Fellowship (2007).  She has 36 peer-reviewed publications.  Although she is no longer in academics, she reviews for numerous ophthalmology journals and serves on the editorial board of the Journal on Binocular Vision and Extraocular Motility.

Dr. Rutar earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 2003, followed by completion of a pediatrics internship at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2004, ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Francisco in 2007, and pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute in 2008.
